The Versatile Blogger Award

Happy last day of September! A sweet little lady nominated me for the Versatile Blogger Award, and made my little day. Please take a quick read, and share the love!

The Rules of the Versatile Blogger Award:

1.  Thank the person(s) who shared the award with you by linking back to them in your post.

2.  Pass this award to 15 recently discovered blogs and let them know that you included them in your blog post.

3.  List 7 things about yourself.

Thank you to Artistry by Adele for nominating me for this award! I was not even aware that there is such a thing, but I so appreciate the fact that you thought I was worthy of a nomination.

7 things about myself:

1. I love food. (Duh!) I can spend hours looking through other blogs, food magazines, or watching The Food Network. I love spending time in the kitchen. Baking is a huge stress release for me. I just can’t seem to get enough. It is a dream of mine to own my own bakery one day.

2. I live in western Canada, in Alberta to be exact. No, I do not reside in an igloo, I do not go ice-fishing, and I do not get around via a dog sled. However, we do live under a pile of snow for 6 months of the year around here.

3. I have a Bachelor of Social Work degree and work in a children’s hospital, providing support to the families of babies in a Neonatal Intensive Care unit. There are difficult moments, but many happy moments too.

4. My little hellion, Bella, who makes the occasional appearance on this blog, keeps me active and is no doubt preparing me for parenthood one day. I’m convinced that raising a puppy is practically as difficult as raising a child (ok, maybe not quite…)

5. I am a very messy cook. As in, my kitchen typically looks as though a tornado ripped through it by the time I’m finished. I’m sure I heard somewhere that the messier the cook, the more delicious the food…

6. Red wine is a very dear and reliable friend of mine. We get together often. I once dabbled in making wine and had a few really successful batches!

7. My favorite TV shows are Modern Family, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Californication. Non-stop laughing fo’ sho’!

Fall Is Here!

20110923-051003.jpg

Happy first day of Fall dear friends! I wish you all a lovely Fall season full of crisp days, falling leaves, warm spiced drinks, and lots of pumpkin. I know I promised you a new Fall recipe today, but life is getting in the way of that happening, as it sometimes does. But I’ve learned that sometimes you’ve got to toss your plans and lists aside and just enjoy life’s ride. And that’s what I’m doing tonight. I’ll be back tomorrow with something that is worth the wait! Peace out!

What I Ate (And What You Should Eat Too) Vol. 1

Hi friends!

Happy almost Fall! Many people out there are saying “Happy first day of Fall!” today but did you know that this year, the real first day of Fall isn’t until September 23? So…Happy almost Fall! I can’t wait to really wish you a happy first day of Fall.

Anyways, I thought you should know that I’ve been eating some delicious things lately. And I thought you should know exactly what delicious things I’m eating, so that you can maybe eat them too. You should eat (and drink) them too.

A Peacharita. Got any fresh peaches left over that need using? Blend fresh peaches with tequila, rum, or alcohol of your choice (or without alcohol, if you prefer), ice, and a little sweetener (sugar, agave, whatevs). Sluuuurrrrppp. Enjoy!

Grilled Peach Salad with Goat Cheese and Balsamic Reduction. Get on this peach train before it’s too late. Your grilling days are numbered!

Parmesan Hasselback Baked Potatoes from Marla at Family Fresh Cooking. These potatoes got rave reviews both times I made them. A great alternative to classic baked potatoes. I followed Marla’s recipe to a tee. Mega-delicious.

Blueberry Oat Crumble Bars by How Sweet It Is. Devoured. Double the recipe (and use a 9 x 13 pan). Trust me on that one.

Chicken Pot Pie with Cream Cheese and Chive Biscuits from Joy The Baker. People might fall in love with you if you make this for them. I would fall in love with me if I made this for me…just sayin’. Comfort in a pan. Need I say more?

Rhubarb Crisp. À la mode. If you don’t like crisps and crumbles, we can’t be friends anymore. Make one! If you combine fruit with oats, flour, butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon, and bake it all up together, it will taste good. I promise you.

These cookies. They’re chewy. Hearty. And I’m pretty sure they’re healthy. I can’t stop eating them. I think I may love them even more than these. What what?

Go eat some of these things k? Pronto. I will be back on the real first day of Fall with something…Fall-ish. Later kids!

Oh, and I also recommend plenty of this.

Savor the Moment | Being Grateful

I like blogs. Particularly food blogs.

I read lots of them. I peruse photographs of delicious food, read stories that go alongside these fabulous recipes, laugh at the wit of my fellow food bloggers. We communicate with each other. We comment on each other’s recipes and stories. There’s a sense of community here. I connect with people through our shared love of food. These are people that live in other countries, on other continents. People that I never would have the opportunity to connect with, except for here, in the foodie world. I love that.

It’s amazing what you can learn about someone through reading their blog. Favorite ingredients, favorite TV shows, pet peeves, exciting trips, family, friends, love, heartache. Because it’s not just about food. It’s about life, and looking at the world through the lens of someone else. Their view of the world via taste and smell. What goes on in life can affect everything. Celebrations call for cake, heartache can cause a loss (or gain) in appetite, busy days demand quick and easy meals.

I had never come across Jennie’s blog before, but happened to land there by coincidence a few days ago. And I learned that Jennie had lost her husband, Mikey suddenly to a heart attack just days before. I learned that Mikey loved peanut butter pie. Jennie asked us all to make a peanut butter pie to honor Mikey. And to cherish the ones we love. To stop putting off things we could do today until tomorrow. Because life is short, and everything you love can be gone, in an instant.

Coincidentally, baking a peanut butter pie was already on my agenda. I had come across a recipe a few days before – and I knew it would be perfect for my mom’s birthday (a peanut butter fanatic). It was delicious, rich, totally amazing. And clearly enjoyed, as evidenced by the fork marks in the leftover pie. I may or may not have sat on the kitchen floor yesterday afternoon, eating forkfuls directly out of the pie plate. Please don’t judge me.

Make yourself some peanut butter pie. Share it with someone you care about. Heck, make it for yourself if you’re so inclined. You deserve it. Today. Hug your loved ones a little tighter. Tell people how you feel, every day. And be grateful for what you have.

Back In The Saddle | Cravings

Hi.

How are you?

Amazing? That’s so wonderful to hear.

Have I fallen off the face of the planet?

No, I’m here. Just crawling out of my cave. But I’m so happy to see all of your smiling faces. I’ve been thinking about you. A lot.

I’ve also been spending a lot of time with this little beauty. Isn’t she pretty? Whenever I point a camera at her, she always looks off to the side, just like a little model. I love it.

One thing I haven’t been doing is cooking. Or baking. But I am going to get my butt back in the saddle, immediately. I’ve been salivating over some other blogs in the past few days, and I’m getting inspired to take over the kitchen again.

I want this.

Crazy Feta by How Sweet It Is. Jessica, can I come live with you? Please?

Creamy Avocado Pasta by Oh She Glows. Angela makes seriously delicious and healthy food. Plus, I really need to get my glow back.

Homemade Churros with Warm Dark Chocolate Sauce by Joy The Baker. Joy never disappoints. I think if I lived with Joy, I would always be happy because there would always be something delicious to eat.

And this. Chocolate Squared Banana Bread by Geni from Sweet And Crumbly. This delicious bread has been on my mind since I first read Geni’s post about it weeks ago. I need to make this, stat.

I think my appetite might be back. Thank goodness there are such talented foodies to help my taste buds get going again!

The question is, what to make?

I have an idea. A really, really good idea. Here’s a hint.

It’s sweet. And creamy. And very good for the soul.

Stay tuned.

Tear Soup

Dear friends,

Hopefully you’re still here. I know that my lack of contribution here has made for very little sharing lately. But I haven’t forgotten about all of you lovelies. Unfortunately, today I have some sad news to share. I know this blog isn’t about my personal life, but it is my creative outlet, and it will be affected by what has happened.

Honey ended our relationship a week ago. It was sudden and unexpected, and it has been so incredibly hard to process and understand. Without going into details, after 4 years together, living together, with a puppy, preparing to sell my condo and invest in a home together, I feel that my life has been completely shattered.

Accompanying my heartbreak is a loss of appetite, a loss of joy in food altogether. Honey was my taste tester, my food critic, my photo critic and sometimes assistant, my cheerleader. Not to mention, in my eyes, the love of my life and my partner in all of life’s coming adventures. Now I must try to get my life back on track, I must try to adjust to being alone, and to cooking for one. I have no idea how to make this transition, but everyone keeps telling me that my life will move forward somehow, and that no matter how deep, time eventually heals all wounds.

So please friends, new and old, don’t give up on me. I will try my hardest to get back to cooking, baking, and sharing with all of you. But first, my heart requires a little mending.

Take good care, eat, drink, and be well.

See you soon,

Amanda

Thinkin’ Bout You | The Promise

Hi.

I’m worried that you might think I forgot about you.

But, don’t worry.

I didn’t.

Some things are keeping me very busy. Some…people too.

Doesn’t the universe know that I’ve got recipes to share? Delicious treats to make? Photos to take?

Yeesh.

To be honest, I had something all lined up to share with you, something that I’ve been wanting to share since I started this blog. Last time I made the recipe, I was hosting a Christmas party and got too caught up in being a hostess to take photos of the finished product. So I made it again this past weekend for a potluck. I saved a wee bit so that I could take a nice photo the next day (as I was rushed), and when I went to grab it out of the fridge the next day for my little photo shoot, it was gone. Honey had eaten it. Argh. But at least it’s proof that it’s delicious. 🙂

Alas, I will have to share that recipe with you another time. But I’ve got a humdinger for you tomorrow. I’ll give you two hints. 1. I promised it to you days and days ago.

Hint #2.

Stay tuned!

Happy almost Friday!

Shopping Spree | Beautiful Things

I went on a shopping spree yesterday.

This shopping spree was well deserved. I thought so anyway.

Every girl should have beautiful things like this to drink tea or coffee from.

Or like this.

Wouldn’t you like to enjoy a bowl of yogurt and granola in this pretty bowl?

Or fill it with Easter bon bons?

And these plates would look lovely adorned with a nice big slice of cake or pie.

Aren’t these just perfect for spring? Love them. They can all be found at Anthropologie. But beware, it will be very hard to choose. It took extreme willpower to walk out with just these 5 items. I already want to go back!

Oh, and look at this gorgeous wooden cutting board!

It’s from Bed Bath & Beyond. It puts my old plastic cutting boards to shame.

I think you should go and buy yourself some beautiful things. ASAP. Happy Tuesday!

(Please note that I am sharing these beautiful purchases with you because they are just that. Beautiful. Anthropologie and BB&B have no clue who I am.)

Cook. Share. Eat. Repeat.

Hello fellow food lovers! I know you’re out there!

While I am new to the world of blogging – cooking, baking, and of course, eating – have been a pasttime of mine for the better half of my life so far. I became hooked on food blogs when my friend, Rachel, introduced me to Pioneer Woman. The obsession started there. In the months to follow, I spent a rather large chunk of my free time poring over countless blogs, reading about hundreds of recipes, and giving a few of them a try. I began to think about the recipes that I love – recipes from within my family, from my favorite cookbooks, and from those culinary accidents that turn into something surprisingly splendid. And I decided that I would start my own food blog as an avenue for sharing these recipes and connecting with other food-obsessed bloggers. So here I am. I can’t promise a fantastically visually-appealing blog (due to the fact that I am a bit technically-challenged), but I can promise some tongue-pleasers that are worth a try. Please bear with me as I figure out what the deuce I am doing. Thanks friends!

Happy eating,

~Amanda
